Our street and commercial Classes are specifically designed to provide opportunities to learn and engage with the rich and diverse range of dance styles that embody this genre.


Welcome to reading more about our Street and Commercial Dance Classes.

At SBS we offer graded examinations in Street and Commercial Dance, using The Dang Street and Commercial Dance Syllabus. The Dang syllabus has been designed and created by industry specialists to prepare students for vocational training and a career in the performing arts industry.


On a Monday we offer a 1 hour Beginner Street and Commercial class. This 1 hour class is designed to be an introduction to Street and Commercial Dance and to accommodate the fun element for young dancers. This is open to ages 5-8. 


On a Monday we offer a 1 hour Intermediate Street and Commercial Dance Class. This 1 hour class is designed to accommodate the expectations of the aspiring student. This is open to ages 9 and above.

What is The Dang

Street and Commercial Syllabus?

Aware that the industry is in constant evolution, the syllabus material has been designed to remain relevant and yet be updated easily as new trends emerge.


The Street and Commercial Syllabus is awarded by RSL Awards Ltd and regulated by Ofqual, being devised following industry and educational consultation. As a leading brand and training provider Dang applies its longstanding commitment to the quality standards, approval and currency of this suite of examinations. It provides a unique progressive training structure in a range of genres encompassed within the Street and Commercial style. The syllabus will provide a safe and structured pathway for students to gain the necessary technical and performance skills to become a well-rounded, versatile and confident performer with opportunities to develop creative skills and individuality. The work is designed to prepare students for college auditions and professional employment.


The main core styles of the syllabus are Hip Hop and Commercial. The grades have a Hip-Hop and Commercial base, with dancers able to pick specialisms in: House, Popping, Locking and Breaking. In Grades 1 to 3 the students pick 1 of these additional styles, by Grade 4 they are required to choose 2 different styles.Unique to the Dang syllabus is the opportunity for dancers to specialise in Locking, Breaking, House and Popping in each grade through a series of progressive drills which develop the necessary vocabulary. Each exam is based around a series of core drills, variations and/or choreographed sequences followed by creative opportunities in performance sequences and freestyle tasks.

THE SYLLABUS AIMS TO:

  • Promote awareness of the necessary skills for theatre and dance training.
  • To offer a safe and progressive pathway for candidates to acquire the technical and performance skills.
  • To lead candidates through a systemic training programme in preparation for auditioning for full-time vocational training and/or professional employment.
  • Offer creative and performance-based opportunities designed to meet the needs of the vocational sector.

  3. Freestyle/Creativity (20% marks)
  4. Performance (30% marks)


NOT ATTAINED: 0-49%

PASS: 50-64%

MERIT: 65-79%

DISTINCTION: 80% and above
