Welcome to reading more about our Heels Dance Classes.

Saddleworth Ballet School's Heels Dance Classes are taught by American dance practitioner and educator, Kathryn Ann Key. Kathryn was born in Sweet Home Alabama, and has forged a successful career dancing alongside Jason Derulo on Good Morning America, starred in world tours with productions like Disney Live, Alvin & the Chipmunks, and The Smurfs, and performing for the biggest theme parks, music videos, cruise lines, and television productions.

In order to develop our dancer's versatility to the highest level, we offer Heels Dance Classes fused with Cabaret, Musical Theatre, Latin Dance, Commercial, Street Dance, Jazz, Contemporary, and Ballet. Our professional heels training prepares our students for stage work on the West End or Broadway, on tours with famous music artists, or music videos, or for National Character dances used in Classical Ballets. Heels are a necessity for dancers and have long been an industry staple. They play a pivotal role in all genres and dancers must master the skill of performing in heels.

Our methodology is progressive, with students learning how to stand in heels with the appropriate posture, walking, transferring weight, and building up to stylistic performance combinations. As part of this, we teach our students the history of heels dance, from classic Court dances of the Renaissance period, the Jazz Age and The Harlem Cotton Club of the 1920's, The Golden Age of Hollywood films centred around stars like Ginger Rogers and Cyd Charisse in the 1960s, choreographer Bob Fosse’s signature jazz hands, hunched shoulders and isolated movements in the 1970's, the Broadway production of Dreamgirls choreographed by Michael Bennett and Michael Peters in 1981, Michael Jackson's Smooth Criminal in 1988, alongside the 21st century heels phenomenon that has taken the performance industry by storm, with the likes of Beyonce, the Pussycat Dolls, and the innovators and teachers who continue to popularise heels today, including Dana Foglia and Aisha Francis. Owing to this, our students learn how to embody characters, tell stories through movement, and how to deliver a dynamic presence.

On a Saturday, we offer a 1 hour Heels Dance Class. This 1 hour class is designed to accommodate the expectations of the aspiring student. This is open to ages 11 and above.

Who are our heels classes for?

Book My Complimentary Class >

At Saddleworth Ballet School, our 11 year olds begin their journey of mastering how to dance in heels. Other factors the Principal will consider before advising a child is ready to start Heels Dance training include, acquisition of dance techniques and styles, physiological development, commitment and progression, and maturity towards training. Most significantly, the students acquisition of classical ballet technique is considered. Beyonce did months of ballet training to master dancing in heels, and as outlined by one of the most innovative dance heels practitioners in the industry today, Dana Foglia,

“Stay in class. Some of the strongest dancers in heels are those who have been classically trained and have a strong foundation in ballet and modern. They know their bodies and can create beautiful lines with their legs and feet. Do lots of relevés—you need strong ankles to support your movement.”

Dancers must maintain good posture, centred alignment, and ankle strength, when wearing heels.  As part of their Dance Heels Classes, our students continually build leg, ankle, and core strength, needed for safe Heels Dance.
